Reading 1.2
This chapter is explaining readers about what is Critical Thinking. Critical here means involving or exercising skilled judgment or observation. There are several standards in critical thinking which is clarity, precision, accuracy, relevance, consistency, logical correctness and completeness also fairness. There are benefits of critical thinking. Let say in the classroom, student learn a lot of skills including understanding the arguments and beliefs of others, critically evaluating those arguments and belief and developing and defending one’s own well-supported arguments and beliefs. The benefits also expected in workplace and also in individual’s life. Major barriers to critical thinking include egocentrism, sociocentrism, unwarranted assumptions, relativistic thinking and wishful thinking. From what I understand, egocentrism is defending beliefs that accord with individual’s interest and bias. Sociocentrism is more to group standards of belief. Wishful thinking is believes in something extraordinary to makes one feel good. Critical thinkers have their own characteristic which is passionate, sensitive, open-minded, aware of biases and preconception, independent, and have intellectual perseverance.
Reading 1.1
What I understand from the article, it is about a convicted killer who back at full-time job as a nurse in an English hospital after being accused murdered her colleague in Saudi Arabia. The convicted killer nurse, Deborah Parry was freed in act of Mercy of King Fahd after being arrested for murder in 1996. The article informs and warns reader about Parry’s reinstatement and also persuades reader to ban her from working as a nurse in English hospital. The author seems write to condemn the decision to reinstate a convicted killer as a nurse once again. She is labeled as “Angle of Death Killer Nurse” by the writer after she carry full-time job as a nurse. I can see the impact toward reader likely to be successful which the writer disagree with the reinstatement of Parry. On the other point, the visual focusing on Deborah Parry wearing a nurse uniform, together with her watch and pens made her look like an innocent and a dedicated nurse.
