In reading 3.3, I discovered an argument about a possible linguistic approach to critical literacy. According to the author, no matter how many ‘literacies’ you can come up with, there are some global aspects of writing things down that are pretty much constant. The author also sees the role of a linguistic approach to literacy as making explicit the technology of written text, how written language works and how this knowledge can be use to become critical literate. In this chapter, it included some commentary on the texts. Both texts have different genre. Text A is classified as a discussion because the title itself already suggesting a discussion. The other text which is Text B is called a report because it has standard genre in the sciences and social sciences. It also considered as unproblematic in the field means they are not cutting edge text, they represent a summary of standard knowledge. This report presents as fact and not really open to question, the qualities of a successful business person.

As a conclusion, this chapter is discussion about how to identify genres in every written text.
