Reflection on Reading 3.4
This chapter Reading 3.4 taught me about the formation of individuals in discourse and genre. According to the author, discourse present modes of talking about the world from the point of view of a social institution. Sexism is the most thoroughly studied discourse. It’s about the socialisation of the natural category of sex and gender. There are several example of article discuss about sexism mentioned in this chapter. The article describes different types of women, in the office, and instructs each type how to modify their behaviour in order to improve their situation at work. These types are Miss Seductress and Miss Winner.
Discourses construct reading positions and subject positions for the readers of texts. Each genre constructs positions or roles which the participants in the genres occupy.
